Gosh I loved this so much Katie! I felt like you were inside my brain! I too often look back at my past selves and think "Gosh, that doesn't feel like ME at all," but I love how you reframed it from something problematic to something positive --- that self just didn't know everything she needed to yet. This was beautiful!
This rings so true. I think we put our young ambitious selves away even though they are so good at telling the truth and being themselves in favor of fitting in with "growing up" or who we think we should be. I applaud your continuing to honor your young self. You will connect to her again ❤️
Thank you! I hope I can carry No Excess through to production. I have a few songs on Spotify/Apple/Youtube music if you’d like to listen to some of my other songs. Just search Color Math. xx
I feel this often, the waves of nostalgia consume me, bring me to an otherworld where I desperately search for an image of myself. Looking for who I was, trying to find her in who I am. How do you bridge those worlds???? Still figuring that out♥️
This is an intriguing line of thought. The past is past and the real self is always here in the present to be rediscovered but nevertheless, we need to formulate some understanding of our former selves, which bits to hold on to as lights illuminating our true nature, which were errors and wandering from our path, from our real identity. These help form our functional identity in the world, perpetually being remade.

Omg saved this post to read after work and ✨cannot wait ✨
The poem and song are awesome. I hope you keep going with the song especially, it’s a certified banger. It gave me Sara Bareilles vibes. Loved this

Wow! “What conditions pushed me toward an inauthenticity so overshadowing I can’t find myself in this reflection of me?”
